The International Precious Metals Institute is now accepting nominations from faculty members for its 2010 Student Award Program. The awards will be made to students who have started or plan to do research or development projects in the field of precious metals and will not have graduated before June 2011.
The IPMI Graduate Student Award sponsored by Gemini Industries, Inc. is $5,000.00 and is awarded to a graduate student whose research involves precious metals. The IPMI Metalor Technologies Graduate Student Award is also in the amount of $5,000.00 for a student in precious metal research. The IPMI Sabin Metal Student Award, in the amount of $5,000.00, is awarded to a graduate student in the field of precious metals technology but also can include a graduate student of precious metals economics. In the fall of 2009 two new graduate student awards have been established and will be awarded in the 2010 award year. The IPMI Johnson Matthey Student Award and the IPMI Metro New York Chapter Student Award, each in the amount of $5,000.00 will be awarded to graduate students in the field of precious metals research. The IPMI Student Award will be in the amount of $4,000.00 for undergraduates or graduate students in the field of precious metal research. All of the awards will be made directly to the student awardees.
Each recipient will be provided complimentary registration for the technical program and social events at the IPMI 34th Annual Conference to be held at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort June 12-15, 2010 and up to $1,500.00 of travel expenses will be reimbursed to the student after the conference. Travel expenses include airfare or mileage to conference, cab or shuttle fare to conference hotel from airport, lodging at conference hotel, and meals (excluding alcoholic beverages).
Nominations for these awards should be made by the supervising faculty member and should be accompanied by a short resume for the nominee including academic progress, future plans and description of their research. Please review IPMI’s website , www.ipmi.org, for a list of past Student Award recipients. Below is a list of selection criteria used by the IPMI Awards Committee for your and your nominee’s guidance.
The Faculty Advisor Grant, in the amount of $5000.00, will be unrestricted and awarded to the advisor of one of the Student Award recipients and will be in recognition and support of the efforts of his or her research. No criteria is expected or accepted for this grant, as our Awards Committee will select the recipient of this grant from the Student Award recipients’nominating packets. Up to $1,500 will be reimbursed after the conference to the advisor for travel expenses to the conference (see above defining travel expenses).
Nominations should be made to the IPMI headquarters office at 5101 North 12th Ave., Suite C, Pensacola, FL 32504 no later than January 25, 2010.
Criteria to be considered for the Selection of IPMI Student Awards
¨ Faculty recommendations.
¨ Academic standing (grades).
¨ The start and finish date (graduation date). There should be at least one year of research remaining at the date of award (June).
¨ Breadth of scientific disciplines/techniques involved in establishing unequivocal proof of experimental results.
¨ Expands the potential for precious metal applications. That is, as a result of the subject work, the probability of industry to use or recover more precious metals is increased.
¨ Unique nature of the work and innovation. Is the research novel with potentially significant new science being discovered, or is it building on existing scientific findings (speaks to the difficulty of the research project)
¨ Precious metal chemistry, applications, etc is the focus of the work, not just coincidental to it.
¨ Nominee’s personal description of the research objective and the contributions that he/she believes will make to science or to the commercial arena.
¨ Research that advances the science and understanding of precious metal chemistry, catalysis, metallurgy or natural science.
¨ The recommendation of the supervisor as to the importance of this work to the community at large.
¨ The progress of the project to date and possible presentation of an interim report to the IPMI conference.
